Leander Paes
Leander Paes is the only Indian tennis player to win a medal in Olympics. He achieved the feat when he won a bronze medal 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Though he started as a superb single player, winning both Junior Wimbledon and Junior US Open, he failed to fulfill his potential as a singles player. Later he formed a deadly doubles combination with Mahesh Bhupathi and had won several Grand-slams. Though they fell out later, Leander continued to win several doubles and mixed doubles Grand-slams.
Gagan Narang
Ace shooter Gagan Narang won the bronze medal in men`s 10m air rifle at the 2010 ISSF World Shooting Championships. He won four Gold medals (Men`s 10m Air Rifle, Men`s 50m Rifle 3 Positions, 10m Air Rifle (Pairs) and Men`s 50m Rifle 3 Positions (Pairs), the last two in partnership with Abhinav Bindra at 2006 Commonwealth Games. Sushil Kumar
Freestyle wrestler Sushil Kumar winning a historic bronze medal in the 66kg category in the Beijing Olympics in 2008 might have come as a surprise to most countrymen, but the Delhi lad was not an unknown quantity in the international circuit of the sport. In 2004 Sushil first made his tryst with the Olympics in Athens as World No. 4 but eventually succumbed to the pressure and finished 14th in the 60kg freestyle category. Sushil will definitely be a medal hope for India in the Delhi Commonwealth Games.
Abhinav Bindra
India’s hopes in shooting lies mainly on the country’s lone Olympic Gold medallist Abhinav Bindra, who is sure to give the medal tally a solid pump. The Chandigarh boy, who is also the brand ambassador of Commonwealth Games, be without a personal coach in the event. “I am mentally prepared to do well in front of my home crowd. It is going to be one of the best Games ever,” said Bindra.
Vijender Singh
Indian pugilist, Vijender Singh continues to head the AIBA world rankings. Vijender hogged limelight when he won the silver medal in 2008 Beijing Olympics. He was the first boxer to win a Olympics medal for India. He then went on to win bronze in World Championship.
Saina Nehwal
Ace shuttler Sania Nehwal is undoubtedly the most promising sportstar India has to offer to the world today. The 19-year-old from Hyderabad is nothing short of a prodigy who has carved her niche as the best Indian woman shuttler India has seen till date. The tiny girl has invoked the feeling of pride and support from the common Indians when she become the World number two a few months back that ultimately helped her win Rajiv Gandhi Khle Ratna Awarad, the highest sporting awards in India. Saina is extremely focused and very talented. Her performance in International badminton is worth applauding and she has won accolades for her performance. She has experienced exponential improvement in her game under the aegis of former Indian Badminton maestro, Gopichand, at whose academy she trains. It is natural that whole India looks up to her for a gold medal in upcoming CWG in Delhi.
